Something’s definatley wrong Upstairs

30 05 2008

And by Upstairs I am referring to the Upstairs restaurant from across the street of Vitan Mall.  Apart from the Mall it’s vicinity includes a waste land soon to be apartment complex,my guess, a car wash, no, not just any car wash  but Magic Car wash where they was you’re car if it’s moderately dirty and the advertising space Kenvelo leased on an apartment building for years now I guess.

But let’s not judge a book by it’s cover or a restaurant by it creativeness glass facade.

So Upstairs cafe & restaurant, which apparently is my first restaurant review, starts off with a cafe. Neat, typical armchairs, a bit too crowded if i might say so….but considering it was empty it wasn’t a problem. The empty theme, in the customer voided sense,  continued into the restaurant part of the place. Bar, tables, comfy chairs, clean and with a very well placed hidden which you might long for if that place is ever crowed.

The service just as unoriginal as the rest. The not to happy about his job, judging the clients by their looks kind of waiter. You know,  the kind that comes back way to fast for the order after he seats you and the utterly forgets about you.

Up until now it gave me the impression of an owner that notices a good business opportunity(they need for a good restaurant in the area was there) but is afraid to take the chance of giving his restaurant  a personality and but at least has enough sense to pay a designer to keep everything in what is now the trend.

This was pretty much shattered when I opened the menu. No it didn’t shock me with it’s wild fusion cuisine but with giving names such as “salata versata” one of it’s 4 kinds of salads . the freaky names continued threw the 4 kinds of pasta/steak/soup/etc…you get the picture. For desert I had a serving of “happy cellulite” and my friend had a “calorie festival”.

The salads   were nothing special . Good thing we got warm bread and butter with it (which was charged separately despite not being asked if we’d like bread) . The desert on the other hand….was first of all long awaited and when it finally arrived, my friends’ “calorie feast” , also known as a ice cream raspberry parfait put us in an awfully good mood.

Now for my “calorie feast” desert, described as a chocolate fondant in their menu or a chocolate soufflé in the pizza hut menu it was a carefully crafted, delicious exquisite piece of desert. So exquisite in fact it arrive even later then my friends cause according to the waiter : the chef  missed the first batch. :D

Price wise it remains in its category, the 2 of us paying around 90  ron for salad , desert, lemonade (X 2) .

In short: an average clean good looking reastaurant in unpretty surroundings   where the food is decent  and the prices fit the place not the food and t with food names more fitting  for those bistros where the owner tries to be funny . All in all best for when you want have lunch while washing your car (in and out takes around 45 min at Magic Wash :p) or for dinner to go with your movie .
